CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a prescribed treatment for the management of sleep disordered breathing to include OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea). If left untreated, sleep disorders can contribute to other health issues. CPAP ensures that the upper airway is maintained during sleep and that sleep quality is good and uninterrupted. A CPAP device will generate mild pressure to the airway via a mask and should be worn for the duration of sleep each night.

Aerophagia (stomach bloating) Aerophagia is excessive air swallowing. It’s a condition that occurs when you have air entering your gastrointestinal tract, including your intestines and stomach. As this air builds up, it can cause significant discomfort in your bowels and belly. The most common aerophagia symptoms are: Stomachache Belly bloating Flatulence Heartburn and acid reflux Burping An uncomfortable “full” feeling Causes of Swallowing Air with CPAP Some causes of aerophagia may include: Pressure is set too high Pressure is set too low Nasal congestion Mouth breathing Exhalation problems Solutions for Swallowing Air with CPAP If you’re swallowing air with CPAP, here are some aerophagia solutions you can try: 1. Check the Pressure Settings If you have a high pressure, consider dropping it down a bit to see if that helps resolve the problem. If it does help, just check to make sure you AHI number isn't going to high (ideally you want that number under 5 but under 10 should still be find). If you're AHI is high, your apnea might be causing you to gasp and swallow the air in also. Experiment with your pressure to see if it helps alleviate the stomach bloating. 2. Check Your Mask Figure out if you’re using the wrong mask. For instance, a nasal mask isn’t the best choice if you’re a mouth breather. Your mask might not be the best style or size for your face. If you’re experiencing pressure point soreness from the straps being too tight or a frequent mask leak, consider picking a different mask. 3. Obtain Expiratory Pressure Relief Most CPAP machines today have expiratory pressure relief features. They may be called BIFLEX or AFLEX, depending on the machine brand. This feature reduces air pressure automatically upon exhalation and could help decrease or eliminate aerophagia. 4. Adjust Your Sleep Position Your sleep position is another essential factor. If you normally sleep on your back, it might be better to sleep at an incline which can prevent a “kink” in your esophagus that could cause it to easily allow air flow into your stomach. 5. Try a BiPAP Machine - Consult your doctor about this though. Bilevel positive airway pressure machines, or BiPAP machines can help relieve aerophagia symptoms. 6. Try an APAP (Auto) Machine In one study, switching from a CPAP machine to an APAP machine led to reduced aerophagia symptom severity. The group of patients being treated with APAP saw substantially decreased median therapeutic pressure levels when compared with the patients using CPAP. If you don't have a heated tube i suggest you get one. There's a great aftermarket universal heated tube system called hybernite. 🤍

Just started CPAP therapy? Watch this video to discover 9 helpful tips for getting used to CPAP machines. 9 Tips for Getting Used to CPAP Machines CPAP machines (literally) give people with sleep apnea the chance to breathe a sigh of relief. As you probably know, CPAP machines are the first thing doctors bring up after you are diagnosed with sleep apnea. The CPAP option is a non-invasive treatment that uses a simple machine to blow a stream of air into the back of the throat. This current of air nudges any obstructions causing apneas out of the way. CPAP machines are used by millions of people around the world. They are the first line of defense against sleep apnea, which can — in rare circumstances — be a fatal condition, or lead to severe impairment due to sleep deprivation. Despite their importance, ubiquity, and usefulness, they can be a little uncomfortable if you are experimenting with one for the first time. Getting used to CPAP machines can take some trial and error. This article will illustrate some of the most common complaints and tell you what steps you should take to begin to get used to your CPAP machine. What Do People Say About CPAP Machine Discomfort? The following is kind of like an FAQ list, but instead of questions, they are CPAP machine complaints we have compiled from far and wide. At the end of the night, every case is different, but for those who truly need a CPAP machine, there is simply no better way for you to recover your concentration, mood, energy, and overall health. The best thing you can do is to be aware that there will probably be discomfort for a short time while you get used to it and take measures to minimize this discomfort. These are the problems that this article will address. Read on to learn how to get a good night's sleep. The pressure CPAP machines use pushes against your natural breath and can feel overwhelming. The mask makes me feel claustrophobic. The machine is too noisy. The mask is too drafty for me and my partner. The mask doesn't let me move around at night. Especially in the beginning. Here's 3 important tips can help you get comfortable using CPAP Therapy. 1. Change your negative attitude towards CPAP. I know i know! You don't want to wear a mask. Who on earth would!? The truth is, you need to so it's not going to do you any good bitching and moaning about it. You need to start thinking of the positives. I'm going to have so much more energy! I'm not going to knackered all day, i'm going to have more fun with my kids, i'm going to have a better mood as i won't be tired and grumpy, my wife / husband is not going to be complaining of my snoring, i'm going to LIVE LONGER! I'm going to be healthier, happier.......I could go on for days! Get your mind thinking positive and that way you are more likely going to give it a real go. 2. Steady as she goes! Start at a low pressure and then over the weeks, gradually increase it as you get comfortable with each pressure level. You need to take control of your therapy! Don't be bullied by your health care 'professional' as more often than not, they have never actually used a CPAP machine in their lives. Learn for yourself what your machine can do! Learn how to adjust the pressure levels, learn what each setting does. Take the time to fully understand what your machine is doing of a night. At lower pressure you will find it a lot easier to get use to therapy. Your mask will be more comfortable as you won't have to make it to tight for the air leaks, it will be easier to breathe against the pressure coming in, you will find it far more enjoyable. Over time, you can gradually increase your pressure levels to get more control of your sleep apnoea but just take it nice and slow. 3. Don't stop until you find the right mask! There's literally hundreds of different CPAP mask styles and sizes available so there will be one for you.....You just have to find it! Make sure you educate yourself on how to adjust the mask straps and fit your mask properly on your face. Make sure you are cleaning your mask on a daily basis. Visit a clinic, ask them to show you the range, check out manufacturer websites to see what is available as you might not always get shown the wide range etc. 4. Be persistent and consistent. You need to keep at it. You need to try every night, you need to practice breathing with it on a regular basis. The more you use it, the easier it will eventually become. Every time you put that mask on and start breathing, your body is adapting to it, your face is adapting to the mask, your lungs are adapting to the pressure so the more consistent you are with using it, the faster you're going to adapt to it. I hope you found this useful. Cheers #cpap 00:00 - Cpap Therapy For Beginners 00:40 - Step 1. Get your mind right! 01:34 - Step 2. Start with a low pressure & build up over time 03:35 - Step 3.
