I explain the OTHER component here! 🤍 Casein Protein | Dairy Addiction | Casein vs. Whey- Thomas DeLauer… Casein vs Whey - Dairy Addiction: The majority of people are unable to properly digest dairy - symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation and stomach pain are common, and however more serious problems such as chronic inflammation and diabetes have been found. For years it has been thought that the main culprit was lactose, however new evidence points to the most common protein in milk, casein, being a leading cause for dairy intolerance. Overview (1): 1. Beta-casein proteins make up around 30% of milk’s proteins and come in one of two genetic varieties: A1 and A2. 2. A2 is the original variety, with A1 appearing somewhere around 5,000 - 10,000 years ago through a mutation found in some European herds. 3. BCM-7 is a bioactive opioid peptide which is formed in much greater levels when we consume dairy with A1 beta-casein when compared to A2 beta-casein. 4. BCM-7 has been linked to delayed digestion, gastrointestinal inflammation, pain and bloating. 5. There are opioid receptors in the nervous, endocrine and immune systems that respond to the consumption of BCM-7. (3) 6. Reactions to BCM-7 have been speculated to be factors in diabetes, heart disease, schizophrenia and autism. (3) 7. Research Bomb: A 2014 study in the World Journal of Men’s Health found that casein promoted the proliferation of prostate cancer cells, so casein is also linked to cancer. (2) How to Avoid Casein: 1. Casein is found in all dairy products, such as milk, cheese and butter. (4) 2. Additionally, to avoid casein you would want to check the label for milk and dairy ingredients. Even foods you wouldn’t expect, such as some non-dairy creamers, margarine, and lunch meats can have casein. (4) 3. In the US, food labels must include a warning if foods contain common allergy substances, such as peanuts and milk. You will see statements like “made with milk ingredients” when products contain casein. (4) Tips: 1. If you decide to avoid dairy, try to consume products enriched with calcium, such as many cereals and milk alternatives (soy, rice, etc). Leafy greens such as kale are also good sources of calcium. 2. If you do not enjoy one milk substitute, try another. There are some creamy alternatives, such as soy milk and cashew milk, as well as much thinner options, such as almond milk and rice milk. If you do not like one, you could still love another! 3. Always ask for ingredient details when you eat out to be sure you are not unknowingly served dairy. 4. Dairy free does not mean casein free, so read the label. According to various species, the casein amount within the total proteins of the milk varies.The casein content of milk represents about 80% of milk proteins. Chemistry The principal casein fractions are alpha (s1) and alpha (s2)-caseins, β-casein and κ-casein. The distinguishing property of all casein is their low solubility at pH 4.6. The common compositional factor is that caseins are conjugated proteins, most with phosphate group(s) esterified to serine residues. These phosphate groups are important to the structure of the casein micelle. Characteristics Properties The isoelectric point of casein is 4.6. The purified protein is water insoluble. While it is also insoluble in neutral salt solutions, it is readily dispersible in dilute alkalis and in salt solutions such as sodium oxalate and sodium acetate. Casein does not coagulate on heating. It is precipitated by acids and by a proteolytic enzyme (rennet). Chemical Constituents Milk consists of 80% of milk proteins (casein). The major constituents of casein are alpha (s1) and alpha (s2)-caseins, β-casein and kappa-casein. These caseins are conjugated proteins with phosphate group(s) which are esterified into serine residues they have a low solubility at pH 4.6. Uses It is used in the manufacture of binders, adhesives, protective coatings, plastics (such as for knife handles and knitting needles), fabrics, food additives, and many other products. It is commonly used by bodybuilders as a slow-digesting source of amino acids. Colin Campbell has been at the forefront of nutrition research. His legacy, the China Project, is the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted. Dr. Campbell is a professor Emeritus at Cornell University and is most well-known for co-authoring the bestselling book The China Study with his son, Thomas Campbell, MD. In addition to his long and outstanding career as an author, scientific researcher, and Cornell professor, Dr. Campbell has been featured in several documentary films. He is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online internationally-recognized Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate. Dr. Campbell's expertise and scientific interests encompass relationships between diet and diseases, particularly the causation of cancer. He has focused on nutritional status and long term health. Surprisingly, Dr. Campbell started his life on a dairy farm, but is now widely-known for researching links between animal-based protein diets and disease. Dr. Campbell has conducted original research and has authored over 300 research papers. He has served on many national and international expert committees with mandates to develop food and health policy positions and is the recipient of several awards, both in research and in citizenship. Since the publication of The China Study in 2005, Dr. Campbell has given more than 600 lectures in the U.S. and abroad. More recently, Campbell published Whole (May 2013), as well as The Low-Carb Fraud (Feb 2014), and the soon to be released 2nd Edition of The China Study. I talk all about the nutritional value of whey protein and Casein Protein. In order to understand this conversation about the supplements, I decided to start off by explaining how whey and casein are actually made. Both Whey protein and Casein are a derivate of cows milk. Essentially, you get these supplements whey you curdle cow's milk. Whey Protein can be found curdled into different kinds of versions of itself. A few examples of whey protein would be whey isolate m whey concentrate and whey hydrolyzed, For more on the topic of whey protein you can click watch my other video about whey protein. 🤍 So, what are the benefits of taking whey protein? Well, whey protein is a fast-absorbing protein. When you take whey it breaks down in your body rather quickly and can then be used to rebuild muscle tissue. So, that is exactly why people take whey protein after a workout. Taking whey protein as a post-workout meal will give your body the nutrition it needs to rebuild muscle tissue. Another supplement that people like to take that helps with rebuilding muscle tissue is creatine but we will save another video for the conversation about creatine and creatines nutritional value. Casein, on the other hand, is called a slow absorbing protein. When casein protein comes in contact with liquid it becomes thick and gelatinous. This thickness causes the protein to get slowly processed in the stomach. In fact, casein protein takes hours to be processed by your stomach. Fitness enthusiasts like bodybuilders and powerlifters like to take casein before they go to bed. The benefit of taking it before you go to bed is that your body will slowly use that protein to rebuild muscle tissue while you are sleeping. Do you need whey or casein to improve your physique or athleticism? The answer is no. You can get your protein from meat and other sources. The benefit of taking a protein supplement is that it is fast and easy to take. Eating the amount of protein that you need to eat in a day can sometimes be tricky. Most of us work jobs and have busy lives that don't allow us to eat every few hours. So, that's where protein can be extremely useful. Plus, these protein powders do get processed by the body in ways that regular protein from meat does not. Just think about how I was talking about the fact that whey is fast-absorbing or casein is slow absorbing. So, that being said they are benefits to take them but it's not entirely necessary to take them and if you are on a budget then I think you would focus on saving your money for other more important things! The best chocolate chip casein protein cookies. Not only do they taste amazing, but they are super simple to make and packed with protein. You won't even know they are healthy! Macro Supps ONE Protein, best baking protein: discount code "MACROCHEF" 🤍 Recipe 1/4-1/2 cup milk (I used unsweetened almond) 2 scoops Macro Supps ONE Protein blend, vanilla ice cream flavor ("MACROCHEF" to save 10%!) 🤍 2 whole eggs ½ cup + 2 tbsp. Creamy Peanut Butter 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract (optional) pinch of salt 1/3 cup of dark chocolate chips Notes A whey/casein blend or just casein protein must be used in this recipe. Pure whey protein will NOT work. I also added a little bit of coarse sea salt to the tops of the cookies afterwards. The salt goes really well with the chocolate! Instructions Preheat oven to 350F. Add all ingredients except for chocolate chips to a food processor. I recommend food processor over blender for this. Blend cookie dough together until a smooth, thick dough forms. Add chocolate chips. Pulse a few times to incorporate into the dough. Place dough into fridge to chill for about 15 minutes. This part is optional, but they are easier to scoop out into balls if you do this. Scoop cookies onto a prepared cookie sheet to make 8 cookies. Press/roll them into balls and flatten out slightly. Bake for 7-8 minutes. Depending on the oven, they still may not be done so you can bake for another minute or two. Be careful not to over-bake or they will dry out quick. Enjoy!
